Jack Levine
American, b. 1915

I am drawn most to Jack Levine's sense of design
and paint quality. His color harmonies are also
very good. Levine's approach is not strictly
realistic in the traditional sense, but it is based
in classical principles of draftmanship and
composition. He is one of the last surviving
"protest painters" of the WPA era. Levine was
the subject of an award-winning 1986
documentary, directed and produced by
David Sutherland, called "The Feast of Pure Reason"
(after the title of one his paintings, not pictured
here). The documentary portrays Levine as an
irresistible and unabashed exemplar of
Northeastern crustiness.
