What is a juried exhibition?

Juried exhibitions are organized by art associations, museums, and galleries. Through art magazines and other means of communication, they solicit submissions from artists for inclusion in their exhibition. The usual means of submission of these works is by slide. The exhibition appoints an individual with expertise in art, or sometimes a group of experts, who review the submissions and advise which ones should be included in the exhibition. Typically, a juried exhibition sets a limit on how many works it can comfortably include. With the submitted slide, the artist must complete an application as well as remit a non-refundable check or money order in return for their painting being considered.

The artist is then notified of the decision of the juror[s], and, if the submission is accepted, the artists must deliver the work to the site of the exhibition for hanging, and, of course, retrieve it at the conclusion of the exhibition. Juried exhibitions typically last one to three weeks. Most juried exhibitions bestow awards on selected paintings. These awards may be determined by the exhibition's original juror[s], or by a separate juror or group of jurors. A formal reception is usually held at some point during the exhibition. Works in the juried exhibition are usually offered for sale, unless the artist requests otherwise.
