![]() Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer in his very first Little Rascals appearance, 1934. In July 2002 I launched a website devoted to the life and career of Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, one of the most memorable cast members in the 22-year history of the Our Gang/Little Rascals series. Over the past year or so I have revisited these classic comedies that provided so many memories during my childhood and adolescence. As much as I loved these films during my childhood, I am now able to see them with an even more appreciative perspective. During careful viewings of these films, I became increasingly fascinated by Alfalfa's idiosyncratic talents, including his well-known singing performances of such standards as "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain", "Little Brown Jug", and "The Object of My Affection". Sadly, I discovered while trying to learn more about his life and career that substantive information on Alfalfa is currently hard to come by. Most of it is concerned with his widely-accepted inability to secure film work as an adult, and his mysterious death by gunshot wound in 1959 at the age of 31. After doing only cursory research, I found that there is much more to this performer than even the most devoted fans of the Little Rascals, or American pop culture, realize. Accordingly, I began collecting information on Alfalfa's career (both as a child and grownup) and on his off-screen life. From this data I developed 4alfalfa.com. I intend to continue delving into Alfalfa's career and life in the coming months, not only to continue enhancing 4alfalfa.com, but to possibly consider a book-length examination of Alfalfa's life and career (for more information on my planned biography of Alfalfa, visit the Writing section of tdludwig.net.) I invite you to visit 4alfalfa.com and learn more about this memorable performer whose life and career has been the source of significant misinformation. If you do visit, I suggest that you first check out the section called "An Alfalfa Appreciation", which is an introductory overview of Alfalfa's career and his status as an icon of American popular culture.
